Apple's share price hits a new high

Shares of Apple reached a new all-time high today amid expectations that the company will report record earnings later this month.

Earlier today the company's stock hit $427.75, passing its previous all-time high from mid-October. After that milestone, Apple's stock had taken a bumpy ride down to $363.37 after the company missed Wall Street's expectations, posting lower than expected fourth-quarter earnings.

Apple is set to report its first quarter earnings for 2012 on January 24. In October the company predicted it would bring in $37 billion in revenue and projected earnings of $9.30 per share, numbers that are likely to be fueled by sales of the iPhone 4S. A smattering of analyst predictions on that total number polled by Fortune earlier this week expected that number to fall somewhere between 25 and 35 million iPhones sold.

Apple's Siri curses out 12-year-old

These have been trying times for Siri.

Not only has she been having to work overtime answering mundane questions posed by those with nothing better to think or do, she's even been helping Santa get off his large, lazy bottom and do his job.
It is, perhaps, unsurprising that she seems to have finally lost her temper. For, as 12-year-old Charlie Le Quesne picked up a demonstration iPhone 4S in a branch of Tesco in the UK, Siri finally let her frustrations out. (Yes, I know she puts on a man's voice in the U.K., but that's just because the Brits have, well, certain issues.)

What lurks within Siri's temperamental soul?

According to the Sun, the conversation went like this.

Le Quesne to Siri: "How many people are there in the world?"

Siri to Le Quesne: "Shut the f*** up, you ugly t***."

You might imagine that young Le Quesne's mom, Kim, was somewhat taken aback to hear someone in authority talk like that.

She told the Sun (I know, I know): "I thought I must be hearing things. So we asked again and the same four-letter stuff blared out."

I am in at least two minds to reveal how it was that Siri might have suddenly turned Smutti. However, the staff at Tesco reportedly said that some amusing individual had entered this rather inelegant phrase as the user's name in the set-up instructions.

Oh, what have we started here?
Tesco, somewhat unused to this level of controversy in its pristine stores, told the Sun that the company had launched an investigation and had sent the phone back to Apple to be diagnosed.

Which leaves just one question dangling about one's lips: Where might the phone have been tampered with? Might it have been in the store itself?

Or might someone, somewhere along the manufacturing and delivery process, have decided that this was the
way to make for a fun Christmas?

Apple's iOS grabs 52 percent of mobile browser users

Despite a drop in December, Apple's iOS remained the top platform for mobile browsing, according to the latest stats from NetApplications.

Throughout December, iOS carved out a 52 percent share of the mobile market, down from 54 percent in November and 61 percent in October, but still in the lead. Google's Android ended December with a 16 percent share, a dip from the prior two months.
Drilling down further, the iPhone accounted for 25 percent of all mobile browsing and the iPad 24 percent, leaving the iPod Touch with 2 percent. Android 2.3 was the most popular version of Google's OS in terms of mobile browsing, followed by 2.2 and 2.1. Devices running Honeycomb 3.2 and 3.1 picked up a 1 percent share.
But nestled in second place between iOS and Android was Java ME (Micro Edition), a mobile platform found predominantly on feature phones. Smartphones have continued to surge in popularity this past year. But less-pricey feature phones still hold a fair chunk of the mobile marketplace as evidenced by Java ME's 21 percent share in December.
Trailing the big three were Nokia's Symbian with almost 6 percent of the mobile browsing market and RIM's BlackBerry with 3.5 percent.
Looking at specific devices, Samsung's Galaxy Tab grabbed almost half a percentage point. And though it's been hot among consumers, Amazon's Kindle Fire accounted for just one-tenth of a percentage point in the mobile browsing world last month, according to NetApplications.
