Samsung confirms the Galaxy Player 5.8, time to get bigger pants

Remember the humungous media player that Samsung is rumored to release? Well, it’s no longer a rumor. Samsung is indeed bringing out a new variant of the Galaxy Player — one that will pack a 5.8-inch display.

The new media player is definitely on the bigger side of the PMP arena. If earlier we only had a glimpse of the Galaxy Player 5.8 on its own, the picture above gives a better indication of how it looks when held in (a normal-sized) hand. The front speaker grill is a nice addition, which distinguishes the Galaxy Player 5.8 from the Galaxy S3.  Not that the size isn’t a dead giveaway.
The specs of the Galaxy Player 5.8 are as follow:
  • 5.8-inch AMOLED qHD display
  • Dual-core 1GHz
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB/ 32GB
  • 3MP rear camera
  • VGA front-facing camera
  • 2,500mAh battery
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

At 223 grams, the Galaxy Player 5.8 is not exactly the lightest media player around to use for a long time. And with its gargantuan dimensions, we imagine you’ll have to make a trip to the tailor to make some modification to your pockets. Samsung hasn’t been generous with launch details of the Galaxy Player 5.8 and its price, but with IFA 2012 about to kick off soon, we should be hearing more of the PMP.

Is the Galaxy Player 5.8 the PMP solution you’ve been waiting for all your life? Or do you think it’s simply too big to carry around? Food for thought — that’s what folks said a couple of years ago about a 4.3-inch phone…
